Eron - 48

Eron pressed his fingertips against the pressure point between his eyes. The worst of the tension sat there, a dull headache that had plagued him from the moment of the Bind. The weight taunted him, never shifting in magnitude, either to lessen or increase. Constant. He’d removed the contact lenses at the first opportunity, but that had brought no relief. This went deeper.

He suspected that Biotechnician Gwen Weylen understood all too well the discomfort that came with close proximity to Agar.

‘Done.’ She stepped back from the stainless steel bench that held Agar’s heavily inhibited carapace.

His upper-body clothing had been removed to enable Weylen to make the necessary repairs to the tears in the faux skin, which were numerous. One side of his neck had been entirely obliterated by the talons of the creature encountered in the alleyway. It had not been viable to take the gallu out in public in the state he’d returned. Tamas had ordered that Weylen be flown in from the Facility immediately. Evidently, the captain and the Messenger had been so supremely confident that repairs such as this would not be necessary that they had not bothered to ensure that either Weylen or Blake had accompanied either of the groups into the outside world. Eron had been somewhat surprised to see Weylen walk into the domed room where the equipment and inhibitor-equipped cells housed the Four. He would have assumed that Blake would oversee such extensive works.

‘I’ll inform the captain that repairs are complete.’ Weylen’s fingers shook as she removed her latex gloves. She glanced at him, biting on her bottom lip.

‘Did you have something you wish to say?’ Eron had noticed similar such looks being sent his way at various stages of her work. Not the kind displayed by Clara. There was nothing nefarious or sexual existing in this woman’s furtiveness.

‘I . . .’ Weylen clutched at the tools she’d just gathered. She took a tentative step towards Eron. ‘Have you heard anything . . . about Blake?’

Eron measured his reaction, ensuring his facial expression did not betray his curiosity. ‘I don’t understand.’

The woman pressed her lips tight and seemed unwilling to continue.

‘What would I have heard about the Technician?’ Eron cursed his words as they left him. Let it go.

‘Nothing. Forget I mentioned anything. You can advise the captain we are done here.’ She busied herself with packing away the array of equipment she’d used for the repairs.

Eron glanced back at the door. This room was essentially a mirror of Tech Room Two at the Facility. Compact and heavily insulated. No one loitering in the greater room beyond the closed door would hear a word Eron said. It was evident something was wrong. That much was clear in the sweat beading on the woman’s brow, the unsteadiness of her hands, and the ripple of fear in her eyes when, on the rare occasion, she made eye contact with him.

He shook his head, shaking off the irritating curiosity with it.

‘I don’t need instruction from you.
